Each day is a day of small beginnings. If the Father’s mercies are new each morning (Lamentations 3:22-233), then each morning is a small beginning that takes us gently farther and farther away from who we were before the first small beginning, before the first, “I believe. Help my unbelief” (Mark 9:24) to who God designed us to be in the quiet place before we were born.
A day of small beginnings.
I will rise and write on a project he gave me – even if he gives me one sentence a day, and, as he gives me that one sentence a day, I will find peace and fulfillment in that one sentence, not berating myself that I am not doing enough, am not behind, am not insufficient into what he has called me. I will write that one sentence, rejoicing, trusting that he will being me another one, until the project he has given me is finished.
I will pick up the white socks dropped throughout the house.
I will make loaded potato soup for someone who asked because it’s his favorite.
I will begin to pray for God’s design, plan and purpose in lives where before I prayed for selfish results that would make my life sweeter, better, maybe easier.
I will not eat bread and will have a cup of afternoon tea to soothe out the knots of the day.
Today, I will walk with God, with Sadie on a leash, talking with the one who sustains me, loves me, knows how I am struggling now with organizing my moments in a daily so they form a cohesive pattern – and when that pattern unravels, I will rejoice, probably after I fuss and wallow only to then remember that God is unwinding the world tangled about me so who he created me to be can further emerge.
It is a day, like every day, full of small beginnings.
What are your small beginnings today?
A walk in spite of the rain was one of today’s sweet small beginnings.
I saw your photo! Loved your boots and your joy! Small beginnings turn into things we could never imagine – don’t they!
It is so true that each day starts with small beginnings. Thank you for this post as it made me realize how big each small beginning may truly be in the eyes of the Lord. Blessings!
Your comment reminded me of when we bought a collie for our boys when they were little. One, who had been biten by a dog, asked that we get a small one. I told him, “When I get him, he will be small.” He could handle the small beginning of Copper. That small beginning grew, and his confidence grew with it while his fear shrank. Maybe, like you point out, small beginnings enable us to grow into God’s big plans! Thanks for giving me food for thought!
Oh, this post felt like that comforting cup of tea, for me! Thank you. I can do small things.
During the last few yeas, I have switched from coffee to tea – tea seems, as you describe, so comforting – so restorative! Your visual adds a dimension to what small beginnings are meant to do! Thank you, Michele, for coming by and sharing this added dimension!
So glad I came here today. This is a breath of fresh air for my soul. As in, I need to bookmark it! I never thought about each morning being a small beginning. ❤
I am so glad he gives us knew beginnings! I love the beginning of soccer season, the beginning of winter and new tomatoes – but I also love when they end and a new season begins! And to think each morning is something new! Major changes are hard for me but small beginnings – I can handle that! Thank you, Betsy, visiting and encouraging me!
Beautiful. My small beginnings include waking up two sleepy heads, ignoring their grumbling, hearing the heat click on to warm the house, preparing coffee from our old machine, journaling with my girls, homeschooling throughout the day…
My small beginnings like yours have grown, and grown, and grown! I miss the small beginnings you list – and what a beautiful list of small beginnings it is!
Hi, Visiting you from Testimony Tuesday. I love your small beginnings, they feel like a permission slip for me to do the same. It is too easy to get frustrated when life doesn’t move as we think it should. This was a great reminder about being content and blooming where you are planted. Thank you. May your soul be refreshed in each small beginning and may the Lord empower through each one. Sweet Blessings to you.
Thanks for this encouragement. It is good to celebrate and find contentment in the little things.
I love this verse, too, sweet friend. Sometimes, I think the small things are so insignificant and unnecessary, and I lose sight of how they are all adding up and creating the tapestry that is called my life. I appreciate your gentle reminder to slow down and do what I can and not demand more of myself than I am able. I trust you will be able to accomplish your goals and find the rhythm you seek. God bless you for being such an encouragement to me and so many others.
You said it so much better than me – to find the rhythm I seek – Yes! That is it. There’s a different rhythm to the day with littles who nap, then littles who go to school – and tween to teens with school and sports! It is a new rhythm, like a dance, God is teaching me. Thank you, Cheryl for sharing your insight!
I can see that you are finding your proper rhythm and pace, Maryleigh. I love that you are doing that and I hope it brings greater joy and satisfaction in your life, even and especially when your life is hard and messy. Thanks for inspiring all of us to do the same, my friend!
Thank you, Beth! Rhythm is the right word. It reminds me, too, about how I attended an jazzy exercise class for awhile and how frustrated I was because I didn’t know the steps, the routine, or what to expect. It took me quite awhile to be able to get through a class without frustration. BTW – I tried yoga today. No frustration there! LOL
Love this! My small beginning is Bella The Miracle Dog, at about 0400. She’s a tiny broken-backed terrier whom we found abandoned in a ditch, and who now rules a houseful of big dogs with an iron paw and piercing bark.
She likes to get up long before sunrise, have breakfast, and a game…which means everyone gets u (except for my wife, who needs the sleep and is in a sound-insulated room).
Bella’s spine may be broken, but her spirit isn’t. And neither is her spinal cord, because she does have control over one hind leg, and can pop herself into a standing posture.
You always write so beautifully and your words inspire and encourage me. Thanks 🙂
It’s no accident that I happened upon your post today! You’re speaking directly to my heart! (I have just used the same scripture in a post I wrote about the amazing beauty and impact of one drop.) Thanks for confirming my need to give thanks and rejoice for the ‘one drop’. Praying that God in His power, wisdom, and mercy will abundantly bless your ‘one’
Beautifully written, and I’m glad I found this gem at #graceandtruth. I’ll share it on my FB page too.
Well, I just love to sit and read your words…period. But that verse in Zecharaiah has been an constant reminder to me of late. I get what you are saying… I am there, too, and I need the reminder to breathe in grace more breathe out faith more breathe in hope and breathe out trust… a bunch of many small beginnings that build up into a life of living in close connection with him.
Praying for you Maryleigh! You touch my heart.
Love,
Dawn
This was encouraging to my heart today, glad God brought this post to my attention. And tea, yes, I want to get in the habit of intentionally seeking out an afternoon rest that includes tea! Lovely words.
small beginnings are the key towards big happiness…..was a nice post !!
