I don’t run a diner, a greasy spoon, a food court, or a soup kitchen. When you are feeding 5 sons, somebody is not going to like the fare served. “You’re not going to have your favorite food every night,” is my patent explanation. Notice I said patent, not patient. However, every now and then a dish comes along that makes one son so happy that the response is worth the, “Ooooh, yuck” response.
Please note that some dishes require more developed taste buds. I’ve become a firm believer that taste buds that scream, “Give me cabbage” don’t develop until age 40. Taste buds for beats must be post-50. Sixteen seems to be the age for oysters. I’lll be sure to note taste-bud-age appropriateness for recipes.

I love your blog, just discovered it when searching google images for a picture entitled “joyful” and came across your site 🙂
I had to laugh out loud when I read your ‘patent’ explanation as I heard myself utter those exact words for the first time this evening while serving dinner to my 3 boys (2, 4 and 6). You seem to have lots of insight, wisdom and experience (the best teacher of all) in the dept of mothering boys and I look forward to browsing your blog. Thanks for sharing!
I have always loved beets(pickled, but no other way—blech) and am looking forward to developing that cabbage one…I am 43. I can’t wait until I can make some blue cotton crunch.
