However, me a marble slab? My boys a marble slab? Hey, you there – your boy is nothin’ but a Marble Slab!
Those sound like fighting words! But, whoa! Put your hands down. Those are Hope and Faith words. Words that hint at a lot of work – but, WOW!
Read what this guy says:” “I consider an human soul without education like marble in the quarry, which shows none of its inherent beauties, till the skill of the polisher fetches out the colours, makes the surface shine, and discovers every ornamental cloud, spot and vein that runs through the body of it. Education, after the same manner, when it works upon a noble mind, draws out to view every latent virtue and perfection, which without such helps are never able to make their appearance” – (Joseph Addison, Men of Letters in the 18th Century, 287).
How’s that education polishing your first grader? 4th grader? 7th grader? High Schooler? Do you realize that it is only in the last 30 years has God been ex-cluded from the school curriculum in western civilization?
Public education in America was formed in order to teach children to read the bible. Providing a religious education empowered a people to control the destiny of their soul. No longer was a person at the mercy of a government who could open or close the gateways to heaven through ignorance or, in the case of many Catholics were denied the sacraments of Baptism, Absolution of Sins and the Last Rights because their leaders had offended the pope. Can one be truly polished, can every vein, spot or cloud be shown in its true beauty without a relationship with The Father? Can one meet their true, noble potential without knowledge of The Father? By withholding this facet of education, our children’s potential is stunted.
If you’ve come around often, you have seen this definitionfrom Noah Webster’s 1828 dictionary – but it bears repeating here:
“EDUCA’TION, n. [L. educatio.] The bringing up, as of a child, instruction; formation of manners. Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties” (http://1828.mshaffer.com/d/word/education).
Dear Father, creator and designer of each of us and our children, please show me how to be a mind and soul polisher. Where I cannot do it, please send polishers trained by you to “fetch out the colours” to make each “surface shine.” Let “every ornamental cloud be discovered.” Let every gift spot, every gift vein that runs through their hearts, minds, souls, hands, feel, eyes, arms and feet – and in between, -oh, Father, let them be revealed, not for fame, not for pride, but to unveil, to develop what you placed within – that only shows itself after polishing. Where a door has been closed, like within our schools, open a window to allow holistic opportunities for development of wisdom and nobleness based on your ideals. And, then Father, teach them to polish others – to help others see the amazing design God created in them – all for good works, all for Kingdom tasks. All for God’s glory!
