Groupthink is a dangerous thing, especially when it is government Groupthink. Our National Defense and the National Education Association are guilty of it.
There has been a lot said about bullying in the public school systems lately. Unchecked bullying by school administrations has had devastating effects to students just trying to follow the rules. One of my sons has experienced bullying. In his case, a student pulled a knife and threatened to kill him the following week. Because the administration did not find a weapon, they disregarded a threat that continued throughout the year.
With even more potential for destruction is the Public School Bullying Policy now being applied to United States National Security.
Rather than discouraging harassing behavior, public school policy for bullying encourages it. Students being bullied are not allowed self-defense. If someone punches you 5,7, 10 times in the face and you finally respond, BOOM, you’re suspended, too. Self-Defense = Suspension. As a result, students trying to go by the rules have to put up with both verbal and/or physical harassment by students who have no incentive to go by those same rules.
This creates an environment allowing the bully (rogue nation) to continue physically or verbally harassing because 1) they do not care about the punishment and 2) policy assures non-action from many students being harassed (law-abiding nations) who want to avoid conflict. Non-action is invitation to continue the status quo, i.e. bullying. The bully controls the environment because they do not care about rules. Suspension is just a holiday for them.
If the parent (National Security Advisor) approaches the administration to determine whether the threat is just teenage posturing or true danger, the administration cannot reveal the danger level. NEA regulation prevents the release of threat levels to any party being threatened. The administration typically responds defensively, “Well, your child’s privacy is protected, too.” They’ll just stare blankly when you say, “Well, my child does not have anything to hide.”
By telling students they must “snitch” on the bully rather than defend themselves in event of an imminent attack, the bully culture thrives and grows. Even if you “snitch,” proof must be provided – not just witnesses. It is as though every day students walk into schools with their hands hand-cuffed behind their backs, unable to defend themselves. The administration cannot protect them, and they are not allowed to protect themselves.
Our president has just tied our hands from defending ourselves just like the NEA has tied the hands of public school administrations. The announcement that the United States of American will not respond with our nuclear arsenal to any type of attack on our country has just given rogue nations (classroom bullies) unchecked reign, just like the National Education Association’s policy in public schools. Yes, we have other weapons, but our president has begun the process of tying our hands behind our backs to prevent us from protecting ourselves from threats.
Group Think always leads to failure. Our education system and our national security need to re-think – maybe by studying non-Groupthink, re-constructionist history books!

A country losing touch with its own history is like an old man losing his glasses, a distressing sight, at once vulerable, unsure, and easily disoriented. ~ George Walden (b. 1939)
