Let me tell you about Tom.

When night-time shadows frightened me as a child, Tom was there to chase them away.

At supper time, breakfast before school, He was there, ensuring my mama saw whether or not I cleaned my plate.

When I learned to read, he was right there, helping me so that one day I could read and savor the stories by Louisa May Alcott, Kate Douglas Wiggin, Annie Fellows Johnson, Jane Austin and Charles Dickens and so many more.

He waited for me to return from my dates – always waiting until I was home safe.

When I read to my sons, first The Tales of Mother Goose, Beatrix Potter, Guess Who Much I love you, and so many more, he was there.
I taught all my sons to read – and he was beside me all the time.

I cannot tell you about all the emergencies he saw me through, helping me see the problem so much more clearly.

My world is a much brighter place because of him.

I am so going to miss Tom. After a lifetime together, of the brightest moments in my life – he is leaving.

The United States government is throwing him out of the country in 2014 – He uses too much energy, supposedly is not productive enough.

And my heart grieves.  The world will definitely be a darker place.

I personally want my Thomas Edison bulb to stay.  Those other bulbs are too expensive, do not live up to the hype (especially in bathrooms), leave me frustrated as I try to read at night(awful lighting) – and are a health hazard due to the mercury content.  Why the government will not let the market (you and me) decide which is the better product mystifies – after all, it was just a man who invented the Thomas Edison Incandescent Light Bulb – not a president, a senator or a supreme court justice. I do not give a flip about my MTV – I want my Thomas Edison Incandescent Light Bulb!
