I must admit, most of the the books available in this age group are fluff. However, there are a few books my son and I rcommend:
Caleb’s #1 Choice – The Magic Treehouse Series
A little history, a little imagination, and lots of words! This series is a solid bridge to the next level where they read can more books of substance.
Caleb’s #2 Choice: The Chronicles of Narnia
These are abridge chapter books that bring each book to you in age-appropriate form. This series teaches Chritian values about choices, struggles, cause/effective of behavior, nobleness, and courage. This is definitely a read-together book.

Mom’s Choice: Ladybird Children’s Classics
You might have to google these, but they are well worth the effort. While books like Horrible Harry provide a light-hearted romp, the story doesn’t always connect the logic-dots. However, these books build character, knowledge, and, of course, reading skills. Keep in mind that at this reading age, your reader is reading out-loud to you!
