G.A. Henty wrote boys’ historical adventures at the end of the 19th century. The vocabulary, while challenging for the 5th grader, will easily build vocabulary for the 6-9th grader.
Two of my sons had great contempt for Charles Dickens, calling his writing, “Old English.” I had to inform them that Old English was practically another language that took training to read. D.Dickens’ books was actually Modern English.
Henty’s books are a great transition to reading the classics, developing both language and sentence reading skills. Many students come into college classes saying, “I’m not a good writer.” I ask, “Do you read?” Most say, “No.” If you do not read much, how do you know what good writing looks like, much less produce it?
