Tip #2
Be Consistent in How You Treat Inappropriate Comments
Maryleigh: But if the comments get a little too hot to handle, consider your choices and apply consistently:
- transfer the discussion to private e-mail response
- close the comment section
- edit language
- delete
Mika: I like the idea of a post specifically designed to discuss an issue. I’ve seen that on other sites where the post is basically a question and then they throw it open for debate. But I think you have to be pretty confident that it won’t turn into a huge flaming match once a few comments are up and visible.
Maryleigh: I love the idea of creating a post on the differences of opinions with a disclaimer asking for respect. This would allow you to present the comments, paraphrasing to suit language boundaries for your blog. I would love to see you handle this! You are so savvy like that!
Mika: That’s very gracious considering it was you who gave me the idea. I don’t think I’d fee ready for that sort of thing – in any case I don’t get enough comments on my blog. An alternative method would be to, as you say, paraphrase teh various comments and create a new post with your responses to them, but with commenting disabled. Tne you’d be sure not to have any upsetting responses. I’ve known people do that before with issues they wanted to inform their readers of but without receiving advice or hurtful words. That would be the way I would most likely go at the moment.
