I think Francis Scott Key while watching the Battle of Fort McHenry in 1812 must have felt much like I feel tonight: Waiting moment by moment to catch a glimpse of the American flag, to see if this brave new country still stood.
And tonight I wait, moment by moment to see if the America I brought my children into, the America where my grandfather worked in a munitions factory during WWII to secure our nation for his children, me and my children, the America my mother worked hard for minimum wage to provide her children with the opportunity to achieve The American Dream. I want my sons to grow up in freedom, find jobs as freemen, not government men for public sector companies, not government-run companies.
Our founding fathers provided great wisdom and insight into a lasting America. It would behoove our representatives to stop ignoring them and take heed before changing America into a socialist county. That is change without hope.
“a wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned” (Thomas Jefferson, 1801, inauguration speech)
“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not” (Thomas Jefferson)
“They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security” (Benjamin Franklin)
I am hoping, praying with all my heart that in the morning I will see the following:
“Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

I am so worried…hoping to see the America we love emerge triumphant tomorrow.
I’ve never been as prayerful and watchful as I have been today towards the government we the people have chosen to stand for us. If the bill is passed, both my husband and my own jobs will be in jeopardy. The company sent out an email urging us to contact our elected officials, something they have never done before.
I pray that the America that was established for us to succeed will be the America that stands tomorrow.
Thanks for your words.
Watching this tonight is making me ill. It tears me apart that the people who are supposed to uphold our country’s freedoms are fighting like mad to take away our rights, and not even considering the wishes of the American people.
Excellent post. I only wish the outcome was the one you waited upon. This is incredibly heartbreaking.
My heart aches…so badly. But we must “soldier on,” yes? Beautiful post…
I don’t like politics. And with the last election, my friend noticed and asked why I was so into it. I told her because it is scary to see where this nation is heading to if a leader who is not godly wins. America needs prayer more than ever before. Watching here with hope, too and praying with you. I’m sad that the healthcare bill won! But I know God is still in control no matter what. Blessings to you sister.
It kills me that laziness and greediness is taking over. Our founding fathers would be so ashamed…
I’m so frustrated with the attitude of the politicians. This week has been awful with the Deem and Pass vote and now this but it is not time to give up. Fighting for our freedoms is what we do.
